Libations – Traditions

Libations – Traditions

Most countries have rituals and festivities to celebrate the end of a year or of an era. The Dutch people from Holland have several such joys. On December 18, 1956, I departed from Rotterdam, Holland, and arrived in New York City on December 25, 1956. I recall missing Christmas and New Years in Holland that year.

“If, When and Why Not?” — Joseph Boer of The Blue Heron

“If, When and Why Not?” — Joseph Boer of The Blue Heron

The highlight of a trip or an evening at the Lake of the Ozarks is enjoying a gastronomic event. Many visitors and fortunate locals repose at The Blue Heron with its majestic view from the veranda at twilight, and of course, with its restaurateur, Joseph Hendrikus Boer. Joseph invites his guests in and shares stories about food, wine and spirits. He also attends to guest details. Joseph has worked to not only perfect delicious entrées, but also to make memories for his customers that last a lifetime. His sharing of life’s advice recently earned him a Missouri House of Representatives Resolution. His insightful conversation with a state representative’s two college-age daughters highlighted always telling the truth, and to never lie, cheat or steal. He shares this same advice with his new employees.

Maifest — Libations

Maifest — Libations

Yearly, in the merry month of May, German-speaking societies rejoice and celebrate the passing of winter at their Maifest, as they anticipate a marvelous and successful growing season. At these county fair celebrations, attendees consume copious amounts of beer and Maiwein as they devour pig knuckles, wursts, cabbages, sauerkraut, pretzels, meatballs made from pork, veal and beef combinations, noodles, potato salad and so forth.

Get Wrapped Up In The Vine

Get Wrapped Up In The Vine

The Vine, on KK across from the old Dogwood Hills Golf Course, started as an art gallery about nine years ago. It then morphed into a wine bar, then began serving pizza and paninis and finally became a full-service restaurant. It has a semi-fancy menu of beautifully ethnic foods that are warm and inviting and remind you of home (if you lived off the Mediterranean).

Lil Rizzo’s Mamma Mia! That’s Italian!

The Borders family has been in the restaurant business in the Lake area since 1985. Carol Borders opened the original Rizzo’s on Bagnell Dam Boulevard as a white tablecloth, fine-dining Italian restaurant. When she decided to open a more casual version of this establishment at the intersection of Highway 54 and KK, she named it Li’l Rizzo’s.

A Few Things About The Swiss…

A Few Things About The Swiss…

Schweizz-Suisse-Svizzera-Switzerland are monikers for the trilingual country in central Europe. Switzerland, a country about two times the size of New Jersey, is bordered by Italy, France, Germany and Lichtenstein. This landlocked mountainous haven is home to two very large lakes, Lake Geneva and Lake Maggiora; a unique climate with crisp snow in the higher mountains favored by skiers; and first–class rejuvenating health resorts.
