The definition of the word foundation found in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary reads, “A usually stone or concrete structure that supports a building from underneath. Something such as an idea, a principle, or a fact that provides support for something
or someone.” The Scott family in Camdenton, Missouri, brings these words to life in both meanings. With their long-established business of Scott’s Concrete they’ve literally helped build the Lake with residential and commercial structures, foundations, sidewalks, streets and much more; and have supported the
Lake’s community organizations and residents as well. Dredging, Inc., was founded in 1954 by Bob and Joellen Scott in Camdenton. “Dad was a bulldozer operator and saw the need for an already-mixed concrete here at the Lake,” Jane shares. “After coming home from World War II he sought funding and started a company to make one.”
What started as a small business has successfully grown to handle jobs of all sizes serving the entire Lake area and other surrounding communities.
“We had the biggest sandbox in the area, and never tired of digging for treasure!” Jane remembers as a child when her mother would drop her off at the plant so she could run errands. “OSHA would definitely not approve today!”
Jane knows these policies, as she has been president of the company since her father’s passing in 1987. Continuing the family tradition, her son Scottie is vice president and his wife Alison assists with detailed accounting.
Jane recalls she was 12 years old and already helping with the accounts receivable “that all fit in one small box at the time, and is
now spread out over three offices,” she exclaims. When Scottie was younger he grew up around the office. Often he’d take a metal folding chair out of the break room and throw it into the passenger side of the mixer and ‘help’ deliver concrete around the Lake.
Learning while young, their valuable, on-the job-skills assisted as Jane and Scottie achieved American Concrete Institute certifications over the years. With their knowledge and wanting to give back professionally, they both have had leadership positions with concrete associations. Jane was the first woman Chair of the Board for the Missouri Concrete Association. Scottie currently serves on the Board for the Missouri Concrete Association and the Concrete Promotion Council of the Ozarks.
In addition to giving their time to professional organizations, they give back to the Lake area in numerous ways with their time and financial support. Plus, Scottie’s wife Alison is the Lake area’s Big Brothers Big Sisters program coordinator.
Scottie and Alison met through friends and have been married for 11 years. They have two daughters, Lily, 8, and Emily, 5. They enjoy being involved with many local charities and organizations. “We love to give back because of all our history here at the Lake,” Scottie says.
“We know we wouldn’t be where we are today without the Lake and the great community we live in.” Jane agrees. “Our concrete is locally produced and it is vital to us that our donations stay local,” she says.
“The Lake of the Ozarks region has supported our family for six generations. Our ancestors came to the area in the 1800s before there was a Lake. As a family, we have always believed in giving back to this community that has given so much to us. We are very fortunate to be able to give back to our Lake community and the people who make the Lake such a wonderful place to raise our family.”
ARE THERE ANY NOTABLE CONCRETE PROJECTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE? There are just too many to single out a few. We are very fortunate to be involved with great projects, and more importantly, great people every year! We believe a small project is just as important as a larger one. We love the charitable projects and are proud to have done things for many nonprofits and churches in the area.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY THE MOST ABOUT YOUR WORK? Jane: Work can be a challenge, but we work with the best of the best! It is very rewarding to go to a job where you can make a difference in the lives of people and provide a material that can be here for many years to come. Scottie: I really enjoy the people. We wouldn’t be where we are today without all the great people from our past and present at Scott’s Concrete.
And on a side note, what kid doesn’t enjoy playing in the sandbox? I get to go to one big sandbox every day with concrete
trucks, loaders, excavators, and all sorts of toys every day!
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO DURING YOUR TIME OFF? Jane: I love to scuba dive and was just inducted into the Aggressor Seven Seas Club. I also love golf, gardening and especially spending time with my grandchildren. Scottie: Alison and I enjoy
traveling and being tourists ourselves some days. What we enjoy most is an afternoon swim in the Lake on a hot summer day. •
