Randy Scism, the founder of Marine Technology, Inc. (MTI), has built a legacy that stretches beyond high-performance boats. It’s a story of passion, craftsmanship, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. But according to Randy, the foundation of MTI started with a simple, yet powerful philosophy. “I’ve been building high-performance boats for over 30 years, and my philosophy has always been to create something that’s faster, safer, and more stable than anything else out there,” Randy reflects. “I want MTI to push the boundaries of design and performance, and that’s what we strive for every day.”

Since adolescence, Randy had an interest in tinkering with motorcycles and various vehicles, developing how to make them go faster and perform better. From Hazelwood, Missouri, Randy loved understanding how mechanics work and got certified at Bailey Technical School to further pursue his passions.

His journey into boat building wasn’t some calculated business strategy; it was the product of a lifelong love for speed and engineering. From dirt bikes to cars, and eventually offshore racing, Randy’s fascination with high-performance machinery naturally led him to the world of boats. But it wasn’t just about going fast. It was about making boats that could perform under the toughest conditions and last for years to come.

Developing Greatness: Finding Love for Racing

Randy’s love for racing developed out of his competitive spirit and love for creating a winning machine. “I ended up working for a guy called Doc’s Marine, and I went in there and bought my first boat, SS176 Powerboat. It had one motor on it. I went back to the dealership and I said, ‘Hey, what’s the biggest motor we can put on this thing?”

After spending his early twenties gathering knowledge and enjoying drag racing boats, Randy took what he learned and directed it toward his next goal, creating a winning legacy.

The idea of MTI was born from a desire to do things differently. When Randy started the company in 1991, it wasn’t about mass production or following industry trends. It was about pushing the limits and creating something unique.

“When I look back at what we’ve accomplished at MTI, I’m proud of how far we’ve come,” Randy says. “We started small, but we built a company based on passion, craftsmanship, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. That’s the legacy I want to leave behind.”

This commitment to excellence was the driving force behind Randy’s decision to leave a mark on the world of high-performance boats. MTI’s early focus was on custom-designed catamarans for offshore racing, where speed, stability, and safety were critical. But Randy always envisioned something more. He wanted a company that didn’t just build boats but crafted them for customers who sought top-tier performance.

Innovation: At the Heart of MTI’s Success

Innovation came at an early age when finding parts and building a boat were a better part of this young boy’s life. In his small Missouri town, high school sports to Randy were racing and finding innovative ways to increase speed, not on a playing field but on a body of water.

It wasn’t always Randy’s dream to be a boat builder but to have a life of speed on the waterways. He took building that dream into a business that supported his passions and his entrepreneurial spirit.

Innovation has always been a cornerstone of MTI’s philosophy. For Randy, pursuing innovation means constantly searching for new materials, technologies, and ways to improve. “Innovation is at the heart of everything we do at MTI,” he explains. “We’re always looking for new materials, new technologies, and new ways to improve performance. Every boat we build is a unique combination of art and engineering.”

Randy’s engineering background and deep understanding of performance design have helped MTI stay at the forefront of the industry. When many others relied on traditional boat-building methods, Randy sought advanced materials like carbon fiber to make boats that were not only faster but also lighter and more durable. This forward-thinking approach paid off, allowing MTI to stand apart as a leader in the field.

But it wasn’t just about using cutting-edge materials; it was about creating boats tailored to the unique needs of each owner. MTI’s boats weren’t built to be off-the-shelf models; they were designed to perform and reflect the personal style and goals of the customer. This spirit of customization sets MTI apart in an industry filled with mass-produced products.

Performance: MTI’s Commitment to Excellence

For Randy, performance and customer service have always been the driving factor behind every boat MTI builds. It’s not enough for a boat to look good on the water. It has to deliver speed, stability, and reliability under the toughest conditions.

At age 20, while Randy was developing his love for the art of offshore, he met the girl of his dreams in a boat dealer’s lot, Cherell. Passions were aligned for a marriage made in heaven with a girl who shared his dreams. From there, his commitment to family and excellence spilled over into MTI’s mission.

“We don’t just build boats to look good on the water. We build boats to perform, to win races, and to handle the toughest conditions,” Randy explains. “Our customers want speed, and they want it in a boat that’s built to last. That’s our mission at MTI.”

This commitment to performance has been central to MTI’s identity from the beginning. Whether it’s the catamarans designed for offshore racing or the luxurious center consoles made for recreational boaters, every boat that bears the MTI name is designed to exceed expectations. Randy’s goal has always been clear: deliver a boat that isn’t just fast but is built to stand the test of time.

Inherited Love for the Sport

Success found Randy and his team internationally, where great leadership and pride for performance developed into a culture that has followed MTI since. “We dominated offshore in the Middle East and in Europe for years and years. Even after I left, they kept dominating. The Victory Team was probably one of the most successful boat racing teams.” After years of international racing, the thrill of MTI’s success caught the eye of Randy’s daughter, Taylor Scism.

“She eats, drinks, and sleeps boats, which I’ve done forever. It’s the only way it works. It’s a full-time job.”

Taylor told Randy she wanted to go boat racing. When asked why, she said, “Dad, I wanna understand the center of gravity and the propellers. What makes these boats work? I want to learn it. I want to learn all of it.” Her passion for being involved in the success of the family business demonstrates how the entire Scism family has bought into creating a generational business that will last for years to come.

Taylor Scism’s rise within the company reflects MTI’s commitment to nurturing talent from within. Now a vice president, Taylor oversees customer relations and marketing, ensuring that MTI remains deeply connected to its community.

The MTI Team: Building a Company on Passion and Excellence

One of the things Randy is most proud of is the team he’s built at MTI. It’s a team united by a shared passion for boating. “One of the things I’m most proud of is the team we’ve built at MTI. Everyone here has a passion for boats and a commitment to excellence. Without our talented employees, we wouldn’t be where we are today,” Randy says.

The culture at MTI has always been one of collaboration and shared vision. Randy credits much of the company’s success to the dedicated employees who work tirelessly to bring his vision to life. From the engineers to the craftsmen, everyone at MTI plays an essential role in ensuring each boat meets the highest performance and quality standards. This culture of teamwork and dedication has been integral to the company’s ability to innovate and maintain a leadership position in the industry.

The ESOP Transition: Securing MTT’s Legacy

As MTI grew, Randy began thinking about the company’s future. How could he ensure that MTI would continue to thrive and innovate for years to come? In 2024, he boldly decided to transition MTI to a 100% employee-owned company through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP).

“We’ve always been a family here at MTI,” Randy explains. “This ESOP is a way to ensure that future generations of employees have a stake in the company and continue our legacy of innovation and success. It’s the perfect way to preserve our culture while securing the future of the business.”

Randy’s decision was rooted in his desire to ensure that the company’s culture would be passed down. By giving employees an ownership stake in MTI’s future, Randy created a structure that will empower the team to continue building on the company’s strong foundation while securing its long-term success.

This familial culture also defines MTI’s relationship with its customers. From designing custom boats that reflect personal tastes to organizing events where owners come together, They build more than boats. It builds connections. “Our clientele isn’t just buying a product; they’re becoming part of the MTI family,” Randy said. This approach has cultivated a loyal customer base, where new buyers are often introduced through word-of-mouth by friends already part of the MTI community. The bond between family, employees, and customers creates a cycle of trust and loyalty that sets MTI apart.

Looking Forward: The Future of MTI

Building an unbreakable legacy that becomes larger than the person who began it all is difficult to do, much less sustain throughout the years. However, with the help of great friends and an even better family, Randy has created a world that will be an integral part of the community for generations to come.

As Randy reflects on the journey of MTI, he remains focused on the future. While he’s proud of the company’s success, hes far from finished. “I’ve always said, ‘The best is yet to come,” Randy reflects with a smile. “Weve got a great team, and the future of MTI is brighter than ever. We’re excited for what comes next.”

For Randy Scism, the best years are still ahead. As always, he remains focused on pushing the limits, both for his company and for the high-performance boats that continue to set new standards in the industry. With a talented, dedicated team, a commitment to innovation, and a renewed focus on employee ownership, the future of MTI is in good hands.
