Candy Coburn grew up surrounded by the strong voice and influence of her grandmother, Loma Jean. It was gospel and country western-based, and Coburn spent many a weekday nights and Sundays under the tent at gospel sings. She learned early that she had a talent for singing, and participated in Dexter, Mo., middle and high school music programs. After high school, she attended the University of Missouri and enrolled as a music major with a minor in journalism.
